Frying Fish and the kitchen ~ Vis bakken en de keuken

Most of the cooking in Uganda takes place outside. When it's gonna rain you flee complete with your charcoal stove into the corridor. Of course not without danger. Time for measures! In both houses we let an outer kitchen build in Ugandan style. Fried fish is nicer than cooked. But the Ugandan tradition is cooking. We found a compromise: The cook cooks half and the children fry the other half.

Koken vindt het meest buiten plaats in Oeganda. Als het gaat regenen vlucht je compleet met je houtskoolfornuisje naar het gangetje. Natuurlijk niet zonder gevaar. Tijd voor maatregelen. In beide huizen lieten we een buitenkeuken bouwen in Oegandese stijl. Gebakken vis is lekkerder dan gekookte. Maar de Oegandese traditie is koken. We vonden een compromis: De kok kookt de helft en de kinderen bakken de andere helft.

Curly Kale ~ Boerenkool

What has Uganda to do with curly kale? Since we live here quite a few! It was our Wedding Meal the 30th of November 1972. We didn't have so much money so we got the ingredients from friends and family and they also cooked it. You see you can also cultivate it in Uganda. However, there is one problem... Curly kale tastes the best if it freezes at least overnight and we're still waiting for that one night frost. It will be a long wait so we found a solution. One night in the freezer of the fridge..... Delicious!!!

Wat heeft Oeganda met boerenkool te maken? Sinds wij hier wonen aardig wat! Het was ons bruiloftsmaal op 30 novemver 1972. We hadden niet veel geld dus kregen we de ingredienten van vrienden en familie en ze kookten het ook nog. je ziet dat je het ook in Oeganda kan kweken. Er is echter een probleem... Boerenkool smaakt op z'n best als het minstens een nacht vriest en we wachten nog steeds op die ene nacht vorst. He zal een lange wacht worden dus vonden we een oplossing. Een nacht in de vriezer van de koelkast.... Heerlijk!!!

Easter at Harmony ~ Pasen op Harmony

Today the first term of Harmony School ended. It was the thursday before Easter. To remember the death and ressurection of Jesus we showed the DVD of the Gospel of John.

Vandaag eindigde de eerste periode van de Harmony School. Het was de donderdag voor pasen. Om de dood en opstanding van Jezus te gedenken lieten we de DVD van het Evangelie van Johannes zien

Every evening we sing for the Lord as well as in Amun as in Ainapakin.

Elke avond zingen we voor de Heer zowel in Amun als in Ainapakin.

Do you have twins suddenly you will probably think? No, otherwise we would tell, but since there are many girls in the same age sometimes like girls in that age do, they wear each others clothes.
Hebben jullie nu ineens tweelingen? Nee, anders hadden we het wel gezegd, maar omdat er veel kinderen zijn in dezelfde leeftijd dragen de kinderen zoals in die leeftijd ze vaak doen elkaars kleren.

Angels with scissors ~ Engelen met een scharen.

Angels appear in different shapes, but before now I'd never had heard of angels with scissors. They appeared to us today. In Holland is going to the barber one of the common things you do every 2 months, but here in Soroti they're not used to cut "mzungu's"; they hardly only use the trimmers. I once went to Kampala to a barber, but after that trauma I didn't recognize myself for a month. These Dutch ladies really are Angels with scissors.

Engelen verschijnen in verschillende gedaanten, maar hiervoor had ik nog nooit van engelen met een scharen gehoord. Vandaag verschenen ze aan ons. In Nederland is het gaan naar de kapper een van de gewone dingen, die je eens in de 2 maanden doet, maar in Soroti zijn ze niet gewoon "mzungu's" te knippen. Ze gebruiken bijna alleen maar de tondeuze. Op een keer ging ik in Kampala naar de kapper, maar na dat trauma herkende ik mezelf een maand niet. Deze Nederlandse dames zijn echt Engelen met scharen.

Already More than 5 years David works with us as Gardener / Caretaker for the compound / "Butler". Recently he became the father of a healthy son. When we were buying charcoal he asked me what name he should give him. For fun I said: "Call him Tony" not realising that he would do... He did! Next to Mathijs (Wim & Nanja) who has also my name as a second name I have a godchild now... Hope I don't get too proud!

Al meer dan 5 jaar werkt David voor ons als Tuinman / Compound verzorger / "Butler". Onlangs werd hij vader van een gezonde zoon. Toen we houtskool kochten vroeg hij mij welke naam hij zijn zoon zou geven. Voor de grap zei ik "Noem em Tony" niet realiserend dat hij dat zou doen... Hij deed et! Naast Mathijs (Wim & Nanja) die ook mijn naam heeft als tweede naam heb ik nu een petekind... Ik hoop dat ik niet te trots wordt!

Too big to Administrate by hand. There wasn't a program fitting on Ugandan schools so I had to make it myself. You can do a lot with Excel. This is the Universal Input screen.
